A basic UPI payment at a toll booth near Kolkata has become a vital piece to the puzzle in the case of the death of Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath. A UPI payment at a toll booth in Kolkata has become an important piece in the case of the killing of Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath. Police said they were able to follow the trail of the suspects from the digital transaction and eventually arrested three people from Buxar district in Bihar.

The officials of the investigation have told us that the accused were in a silver car, which crossed the Bally toll plaza in Howrah just before the fatal shooting, officials have told us. The toll on the crossing was said to be paid using a UPI transaction, the breakthrough investigators were looking for.

The police officials said they were able to retrieve one mobile number of one of the suspects via the payment trail. Investigators then cross-referenced the digital data with CCTV video from the toll plaza that reportedly showed very clear video of the vehicle and occupants approaching the crime scene.

The teams, following in their footsteps, conducted raids in Bihar’s Buxar district and arrested three individuals whose names are Vishal Srivastava, Mayank Mishra and Vicky Maurya. Police, however, have yet to officially say that they have made any arrests.

Buxar superintendent of Police Subham Arya said that a team from West Bengal had done search operations in Buxar and arrested a few people for questioning. The suspects are being quizzed, he said, but he didn’t specify other details because of the investigation.

The case has since been bolstered by the electronic payment trace, surveillance footage and a location, investigators say. Authorities are now investigating if the killing was part of a larger plot and are sifting through other communications and finances between the suspects.

After the killing of Chandranath Rath, BJP leaders had raised eyebrows over the lack of law and order in the state and had called for immediate action in the state of West Bengal.
