The race has heated up for the 2029 general election to become the next Prime Minister of India after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh endorsed party leader and actor Vijay as his choice for the office.
Kanimozhi said Vijay would become the Prime Ministerial candidate in 2029 and hinted at major and “shocking” changes in Indian politics on Wednesday in a meeting with reporters.
Kanimozhi responded to any objections that Congress is said to have had on such a possibility, saying that Rahul Gandhi “Won’t want to say when but soon will support Vijay. She has alleged that Gandhi has helped Vijay become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and would do the same for him in becoming the Prime Minister’s office by 2029.
Kanimozhi said that she had predicted in 2025 that Vijay will become Tamil Nadu chief minister in 2026, and added that she was sure of her prediction. She noted that so far her prediction was proven right, so she was just as confident with her 2029 prediction.
The controversy snowballed after posters depicting Vijay as the “Tomorrow’s PM” of the country were put up in certain places of Tamil Nadu, notably in Thoothukudi. The posters reportedly came out by TVK functionary Sudhakar who had quit the AIADMK and joined the party.
The concept of projecting Vijay for PM has support from several politicians in the TVK. The government has also made it very clear by TVK PWD Minister Aadhav Arjuna that the country’s top constitutional position should be occupied by a Tamilian.
The developments have thrown a fresh question mark on TVK’s national aspirations and its possible political alliances to come up to play in the Lok Sabha polls in 2029.
