A strange situation arose in Sangrur, Punjab, following the investigation carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the home of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the government in Punjab and C.B. Singh act-quality Rajbir Singh Ghuman in the village of Gharachon in the district.

The search was a part of a corruption investigation in which the CBI has filed FIR against Ghuman and five along with directions issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The agency also conducted a search at several other places including at the camp office of the group’s Chairman, Mr. Mann in Chandigarh. Investigations of allegations of government postings and tenders, policy decisions and other matters. The allegations have not been proven in court.

The CBI action brought the Punjab politics in a headlong battle. As the agency conducted its search, representatives from Waris Punjab De and Akali Dal Punar Surjeet attended at Gharachon.

Once the CBI’s veiled off, some showered showers of flower petals, bhangra and dhol beats to the agency officials. The images soon went viral among state’s political circles. The two were allegedly picked up by the Sangrur Police and the officer at the station house was suspended for alleged neglect of duty.

The reaction was an expression of public sentiments and the Mann government was intent on protecting those on carpet of corruption, said Shiromani Akali Dal chief Bikram Singh Majithia. Punjab government is blaming BJP for the development, which is significant, said Tarun Chug, leader of BJP.

But the Mann government has challenged the High Court’s CBI probe order in the Supreme Court. Mann has said the central agencies are being abused for a political purpose, as the CBI should explain what it obtains in the course of the searches.

The investigation is ongoing and the CBI has called Ghuman and the five accused for questioning.
