The governing party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), emerged victorious in the Punjab civic body elections, winning an overwhelming majority on Friday. With great political strength, the party won over 48 percent of the total municipal wards, bagging over 900 seats from the state.
As per final results declared by the Punjab State Election Commission, AAP secured 957 out of 1,977 total wards that went to polls. The leading opposition Indian National Congress came in second place, securing just 397 wards, whereas independent contestants were ranked third with 251 wards.
Further, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) occupied fourth place with 191 wards, and the BJP ranked fifth with 167 wards. The stunning victory has led to massive celebrations all over Punjab. AAP workers organized celebrations in different party offices, distributing sweets and dancing to the beats of the ‘dhol’.
AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal thanked the people of Punjab for bestowing their faith in the good governance of the state government. Speaking to media, Kejriwal commented, “The people have rejected the ‘ED party’, which is running the Central government”.
Likewise, the Punjabi Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also termed this verdict as a clear endorsement of the pro-development approach pursued by his state government. “Hate politics has received a clear defeat at the hands of the people,” asserted Bhagwant Mann. As per the details of the election, the voting percentage for the balloting process was 63.94% in total. Analysts regard this overwhelming victory as a great win for AAP, thereby strengthening its base among Punjabi urban voters.
