On Saturday, a police team from West Midnapore district raided Abhishek Banerjee’s home, in a land fraud probe involving one of his aides, in the Kalighat area of Kolkata in the early morning.
Police officials said they were trying to trace Banerjee’s personal assistant, Sumit Roy, who has been named as an accused in the case. Search reportedly started at the early morning and lasted over one hour.
The operation was conducted on the basis of information indicating that the culprit may be in the vicinity, police said. But officials said that Roy was not found in the search and no items were taken from the building.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was invited to the residence shortly after the surgery started, reports state.
Abhishek Banerjee told reporters the search was done by the investigating agency and he stressed that inquiries on operation should be brought to the investigators’ attention.
According to police officials, the Salboni police station executives had gone in touch with the police authorities of Kolkata before the search was conducted. In the operation, more staff, especially women police officers and security forces, took part.
The search follows a series of legal probes of Banerjee in the past few months, with the police saying that he has been summoned in several cases by various agencies.
Details of the ongoing investigation have not been released and authorities are still working to locate the accused.
