The Union government has immensely ensured security measures in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly before its first assembly elections in the last ten years. This mobilization is happening at a time when there has been a rise in terror activities, especially in the Jammu region, which is characterized by hills and mountains. Allegations suggest that between March and April of this year, 60 to 80 terrorists crossed the border and entered the Jammu region, thereby demanding enhanced security. India’s security forces are conducting vigorous counter-insurgency operations to prevent infiltrations by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists.
These threats have led to the enhancement of forces wherein the Indian Army has inducted 3,000 extra troops, including 500 para commandos, to make up for the threat they pulled out after the Galwan incident between India and China in June 2020. The Border Security Force (BSF) has shifted 2,000 personnel from Odisha to the Jammu international border. The Assam Rifles has shifted about 2,000 men from Manipur for anti-terrorism operations. The aim is to deter trespass and identify and eliminate those terrorists who have managed to cross the border.
There has been an improvement in surveillance activities both along the 744-km LoC and the 198-km international border. Advanced surveillance systems and firearms have been available to deal with aerial threats such as drones. Also, this BSF has launched an anti tunnelling drive to check and eliminate tunnels at the Indo-Pak border being used by terrorists.
BSF Director General Daljit Singh made an aerial security study of the Jammu border on August 22. The Union government keeps about 450 paramilitary companies for the Amarnath Yatra and has mobilized another 450 companies for election purposes, thereby making it to nearly 900 companies. This deployment comprises the Jammu and Kashmir Police, who have, in the recent past, experienced an increase in manpower in strategic positions.
Security agencies have become much more aggressive in anticipating terror attacks, especially in districts like Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Ramban, Rajouri, and Poonch.
