The Odisha Police conducted a special enforcement operation across the state and it is reported that they had arrested 1,771 people and seized huge amounts of drugs, weapons, and illegal vehicles.
The five-day operation was initiated on the directives of the director general of police, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania and was supervised by additional director general of police Sanjay Kumar. District police (DPUs) and police commissionerates in Odisha have organized the drive.
The operation has been done to set up the non-bailable warrants, arrest wanted criminals, go against drug trafficking, stop illegal transportation of minerals and weapons and be hard on the drunken drivers.
During the campaign more than 3,000kg of ganja, 16.6g of brown sugar, 20 unlicensed guns, several vehicles, mobile phones and cash were recovered, police said. A total of 31 cases for violation of NDPS Act and 29 accused persons were arrested in relation to narcotics smuggling. Additionally, 716 excise related cases were also filed.
Five notorious criminals were booked under the National Security Act and hundreds of habitual criminals were booked under provisions of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) under the state’s law, the statement added.
As part of the road safety crackdown, police also took action against 966 people for drunk driving and seized their vehicles. In the course of this operation, almost ₹1.89 crores penalty was collected under Motor Vehicles Act.
Police activities include fighting organised crime, drug trafficking and recidivists at all levels in the State, officials said.
