Nainital: In a private gathering allegedly held for Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-based pesticide dealers at Nainital district, Uttarakhand, 52 were detained by the police at a forest resort in the district.

Police say the gathering was billed as a “get-together” for the dealers from a pesticide manufacturer. Officers during the operation arrested the organiser of the event Umendra Kumar of Meerut and a few other attendees. The majority of persons arrested are said to be living in Uttar Pradesh.

The investigators claimed that the women had been invited to attend the event, and they were paid to attend and participate in the gathering. Police is confirming names of anyone attending the programme and determining if any laws were broken during the programme.

Good intelligence regarding activities at the resort enabled the raid to be conducted. Evidence collected at the scene is being analyzed and statements from those on the scene are being taken as part of the investigation, officials said.

Authorities are also investigating the involvement of the organisors, the resort management and any individual associated with the event on their part. If the violation of the law is found, appropriate legal measures will be implemented.

Police has not yet made details of charges public and said it is an investigation. More information will be released following the arrival of the detained individuals and their questioning and verification.
