Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, on Wednesday, visited the Mon district in Nagaland devastated by the landslide and gave a pledge of the Centre’s support to rescue, rehabilitate, and restore the affected area. The visit is in the wake of devastating landslides that killed 11 people and resulted in extensive damage in the district, weeks ago.
Nadda met the impacted families with Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal and Nagaland MP S Phangnon Konyak to inspect the devastation on the ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had requested him to reflect on the scenario and pass on the Centre’s goodwill to Nagaland citizens, he stated.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, Nadda assured that the Union government would provide all stat possible assistance to the area to help restore normalcy.
Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak briefed the visiting delegation on the level of the disaster situation, saying the continuous rain and flash floods had led to over 800 houses being completely destroyed with 1,079 partially damaged. Damages to roads and bridges and public infrastructure were also severe.
Relief camps and temporary shelters are set up, food, drinking water, medicines, and other essential supplies are dispersed to people affected. Affected education students have also been heavily affected as seven schools are damaged including 15 hostels which housed almost 1300 students that lost their study materials and uniform.
The cumulative total of rainwater of Mon district has reached 341mm from 19th July to 31st July, leading to several landslides and floods. Collaborative efforts in the restoration and relief operations are ongoing in the affected regions.
