West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has urged personnel in the state police force to tighten security ahead of festivals, which she alleges some anti-social elements are trying to disrupt.
In conversation with the officials, the Trinamool Congress leader raised her fear over a conspiracy to disturb the festive seasons like Diwali, Kali Puja, and Chhath Puja. As for any possibility of violence, she has pointed out the need for more caution and specific actions of police.
Banerjee stressed the danger, adding that “Kali Puja is coming soon. The police and Special Task Force need to be smart so as not to have any explosions again. It is peaceful, there are some people who plan to foment communal riots and turn this into a violent place, so we must be careful.” She declined to identify the people or organizations she thinks are participating but was clear on the need to improve intelligence efforts and raise the STF presence during this period.
During her speech, Banerjee also pledged to keep up the work of preserving peace and harmony between communities in the state. ”We must not allow any anti-social element to take advantage of the upcoming festival to cause mayhem,” she said. Besides, she encouraged the media to be careful not to escalate the situation and cause high alarm within society. In these words, “I do not want communal tension in Bengal. The police will arrest anyone who is out to provoke the others, but I appeal to the media not to aggravate this issue… Please do not antagonize the public,” she said also.
The situation was stated by Mamata Banerjee recently after Cyclone Dana, which affected some districts in West Bengal. While analyzing the progress of the state’s cyclone recovery efforts, her administration further maintains the safety of people in her country and wants the festivals to be celebrated without violence.
