A follow-up report has found that around that time when Ujjain was building up its infrastructure, the Yadav family, and friends and associates, acquired a lot of land in the city. The report noted that land acquisition by relatives and associated entities went up significantly since 2021 when Yadav became a minister and remained high since his appointment as CM in December 2023.
The investigation states that more than 250 acres were purchased in multiple prime locations that would benefit from Ujjain’s current urban development, roads, and commercial plans. Numerous mentions of these plots were generally in close proximity to proposed infrastructure corridors or areas identified for future residential and commercial development within the boundaries of the Ujjain Master Plan 2035.
The report has raised more questions of transparency about the land sales and if any conflict of interest had arisen, leading to opposition parties challenging the report. Critics state that the transactions occur at an opportune time which raises fair questions about information access and benefits associated with public development projects.
But, the state government officials have denied any attempt of directly allamaing the Chief Minister with land acquisition affair. The properties were bought by close relatives, who have been active in the realty business for many years, and there is no evidence of any undue use made by them of their official position, officials said.
The expose has ramped up land scams in Ujjain which is undergoing one of its biggest-ever infrastructure overhauls.
