The Government of India will be giving a big push to the Jal Jeevan Mission in Madhya Pradesh, distributing ₹5,000 crore to assist in the target of ensuring safe drinking water to every household by March 2028. The statement was made at a high-level review meeting of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
The funds will be applied to speed up thepace of growing more tap water connections throughout the state, in both rural and urban areas. Authorities have been instructed to ensure timely and efficient use of the funds with the aim of putting households without access to piped drinking water on the water grid before the deadline.
At the review meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted that the state needs to adopt more sustainable water management practices, rather than relying on short-term solutions. He pointed out that relying too heavily on tube wells will not be a solution to frequent water scarcity and advised the department to ease up on the use of groundwater more gradually.
Mohan Yadav also emphasized the need for restoring and recharging ponds, lakes and traditional water bodies for enhancing ground water levels. He urged for a holistic approach to restore water conservation facilities and bolster the long-term water security of the state.
The initiative is part of the Jal Jeevan Mission aimed at providing functional tap connection and safe drinking water to all the villages of the country. The extra money is expected to make a significant contribution towards the state of Madhya Pradesh’s strategy to achieve its ambitious target of water supply and enhance the quality of life for millions of people.
