The Bargi dam at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, which was 90% filled on Thursday, is now filling up and has begun to overflow after a non-stop month of heavy rainfall in the region. With increased water levels in the dam’s catchment areas Mandla and Dindori, Water Resources Department opened 17 gates.
The 17 gates have been opened about 2.38 metres with water discharge in Narmada River of about 6,121 cumecs, according to dam management. Huge quantities of water have been rushing through the dam and water is also flowing over numerous other gates.
The unrivalled surge in the water level has led to inundation of a number of major ghats along Narmada. There has been an uptick in monitoring efforts in areas near the river and authorities have advised residents of low-lying areas to stay alert.
The management officials for the temples and ghats have also appealed to the public against the entry of people in the ghats and in the area of ghat томуanga after the onset of floodwaters. Some areas are expected to be unsafe for residents and visitors and they have been warned against entering waters with water levels and currents that could present a safety hazard.
Vulnerable areas have been alerted with police and disaster relief forces to monitor disaster situation and take actions in emergencies when necessary.
The water level at Bargi Dam is slowly rising during a spell of heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh. Authorities are vigilant in closely monitoring the dam and the Narmada River to measure any additional rise or fall in the river’s water level and the safe release.
