Purnea: Given this tragic incident, the Bihar education department has tightened steps following the drowning of two girl students in a ditch near their school in Purnea district. The school day was on Saturday, and as a result, the headmaster was dismissed, and all teachers in the school had their salaries stopped, as reported by the officials.

The two students of Class III of Alinagar Middle School-2 in Krtiyanand Nagar block of the district, the victims, were alleged to have gone to the ditch to answer nature’s call as all the toilets in the school had been locked. This has led to a lot of uproar, and the education department is acting on it as of now.

DEO Shiv Nath Rajak further said that the headmaster, Chandra Shekhar Thakur, was suspended the day the incident occurred. According to the current structure, a three-member team spearheaded by the District Project Officer (DPO) was sent to the scene of the disaster and required to gather background information in a quest to compile a report on the incident of the tragedy. The team observed and collected information about the school’s progress on Monday with the headmaster being suspended, and the result or report is supposed to be submitted for the next two or three days.

DEO was categorical about the fact that the practice of locking the school toilets in the course of a school day is contrary to the dictates of the department. Further actions will be implemented depending on the results of the investigation report; he mentioned this. It is elementary to point out that the preliminary investigation clearly indicates that the school administration is grossly negligent.

On Sunday, the letter from the office of the District Programme Officer (DPO) & SSA, Kaushal Kumar, stated that all the teachers at the school were equally responsible for the incident. The letter called for prompt disciplinary measures against the nine teachers present on the said day and the non-release of their salaries. The teachers have been warned they must post their explanations within 24 hours.
