New Delhi: The protest of girl students intensified late Thursday night at the University Hostel for Women (UHW) of Delhi University. A large number of girl students sat on a dharna outside the hostel premises from around 9:30 pm and raised slogans against the administration. The protesting girl students allege that the hostel administration is pressuring them to vacate the hostel forcibly. According to the girl students, several such actions have been taken by the administration which are affecting their studies and exam preparation. The girl students alleged that the water supply in the hostel has been stopped, chairs have been removed from the reading room and additional fees are also being charged.
They say that such arrangements are causing them significant difficulties during exam time. The protesting students have demanded that the administration reconsider its decision to vacate the hostels and immediately restore basic amenities for students. The students say their protest will continue until their demands are met. According to the protesting students, many students are currently preparing for semester exams and NET.
At this crucial time, the administration cut off the water supply to two blocks of the hostel, exacerbating the situation. The students say that the water cutoff in Delhi’s scorching heat has exacerbated both living and studying difficulties. The protesting students say that the sudden decision to vacate the hostels in May is unfair, as many students have already paid their fees for June and July. Therefore, the mid-semester order to vacate the hostels is creating both mental and financial hardship for the students.
