Given the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit being hosted in the national capital, September 11, 2026, has been declared a holiday in the office of the Central Government in Delhi and New Delhi.
The closure has been officially notified in an official memorandum by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions on Thursday. A number of logistical considerations and the view that there was little harm to minimising inconvenience to the general public combined with the scale of the high-level event was why the decision was made.
Earlier, Delhi government had issued a notification regarding the celebration of a holiday on September 11 for all its government offices as well as autonomous bodies and public sector organizations.
The BRICS Business Forum will be held in parallel with the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on 11-13 September. The prestigious event will be attended by leaders of more than 30 countries of the BRICS group and partner countries, heads of BRICS international organisations and business representatives.
The shutdown of government offices on Sept. 11 also will help authorities’ efforts to deal with the huge security measures and traffic restrictions expected during the summit throughout the metropolitan area.
September 12 is Saturday and September 13 is Sunday so government offices will be even closed over the weekend.
India took the reins of the BRICS for 2026, starting January 1. The theme of the country is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” and the definition of the country’s work is focusing on a people-centric approach based on the principle of “Humanity First”.
