New Delhi: Air travel at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) experienced a lot of disruptions, owing to the current elevated military tensions between India and Pakistan, for the second consecutive day, with many flight schedule cancellations and average plane delays. The increased airspace barriers resulting from recent cross-border hostilities, especially in the incidents involving drone and missile attacks on Indian regions such as Jammu, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, have had tragic implications on flight events.
A total of 228 flights have thus been cancelled over the last two days, according to airport officials. In a single day on Friday itself, 138 flights were cancelled: 63 domestic arrivals, 66 domestic departures, 2 international arrivals, and 5 international departures. It was just as messy on May 8, with over 200 flights delayed, more than 90 be grounded, while busy morning hours between 8 AM to 2 PM saw more than 90 flights scrapped.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which runs IGIA, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “Delhi airport operations continue to be normal. However, changes in the airspace environment and a more aggressive security program, some of the flight schedules and security processing times may also be affected”.
With over thousands of passengers it serves every day, IGIA is India’s largest and busiest airport. In the light of national security, the airport has increased safety protocols. DIAL has advised travelers to ensure they arrive in good time to expect additional security checks with full cooperation from staff from airlines and CISF personnel to eliminate hassles or delays during the boarding process and transit.
The incessant disruptions occur bearing in mind the need for a widespread military conflict, and passengers are advised to keep in touch with their respective airlines for updated, real-time information. Authorities are still on high alert, and more cancellations or delays are expected once the cross-border tensions continue over the next few days.
