New Delhi: Dealing yet another major setback to consumers and transporters, the cost of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) was increased by ₹2 per kg in the nation’s capital earlier today. As per Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the new rates came into effect at 6:00 AM on Wednesday, May 26, 2026, taking the cost of CNG to ₹83.09 per kg in Delhi.
This comes as the fourth consecutive price increase for the fuel within just 11 days, during which the cumulative cost hikes have added to an extra ₹5 to ₹7 per kg to the green fuel, thereby increasing its cost and making it a burden for common people who started using CNG to dodge their way out of expensive petrol and diesel.
The Impact on Daily Commuters
The sudden surge would take a toll on the public transport fleet that depends on CNG. Auto rickshaws, app-based taxis, and public buses operate on CNG, and transport unions have raised concerns that a hike in fares would be unavoidable.
The reason attributed by the energy analysts for such frequent price rises is due to the increasing geopolitical tension in the West Asian region. With fear of any disruption to the energy flow through the strategic strait of Hormuz, which plays an important role as the passage of global energy exports, there have been price surges in the global crude fuel market. Since India depends on import for almost 85 percent of its crude oil needs, any price increase in the global energy market gets instantly reflected in the retail price increases.
