Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved additional MBBS seats for Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial (JNM) Medical College, Raipur, which will help significantly boost the medical education system in Chhattisgarh. Now the college, affiliated to the Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Memorial Health Sciences and AYUSH University, will be accepting 250 students for MBBS course, from the 2026-27 academic session.

The approval has made the annual intake of college from 230 seats to 250 and thereby 20 new MBBS seats were added, according to the approval given by MARB. With the decision, there will be more opportunities for students who are keen to become doctors in the state.

JNM Medical College was established with 60 seats in the MBBS course in 1963, and has gradually increased its intake over the years. The intake fee was raised to 100 seats after which it was increased to 150 seats in 2009, 180 seats in 2019, 230 seats in 2023 and now with the latest approval from National Medical Commission, it is increased to 250 seats.

The additional seats will allow more students from Chhattisgarh to get admissions in medical institutes instead of going out of the state, State Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal welcomed the decision. The expansion will boost the state’s workforce in health care in the upcoming years, he said.

The minister also acknowledged the contribution made by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in building infrastructure for continuous development of medical education in the state. They also feel that the elevation in intake will help in spreading the qualified doctors and further strengthen the medical education capacity of the state and offer the medical education students to gain access to the professional medical education.
