The Congress initiated its ‘Nyay Padyatra’ in Chhattisgarh under the leadership of Congress president Deepak Baij on Wednesday to protest the demolition of poor families’ houses in the village Nakti of Nava Raipur.

The march was to start from the village of Nakti and finish at Lok Bhavan (now designated as Raj Bhavan), where a Congress delegation will submit a mass memorandum to the Governor. The party is calling for proper rehabilitation and appropriate compensation for affected families for the drive for demolition.

The padyatra was joined by a large number of party workers, MLAs, Congress leaders and local people to see the plight of the affected families. The march has entered the area of PTS Chowk, Mana, Fundhar Chowk, Shri Ram Mandir (Currency Tower), Telibandha and Gaurav Path till it reaches its destination!

According to the Congress, around 85 families from Nakti village are yet to receive justice. The party has asked for individual compensation of 2,000 sq ft each to affected families and for reimbursing whatever damage is incurred due to the destruction of their houses within the village of Nakti.

Although the administration had allocated temporary accommodation for all the displaced families in housing board flats of Sector-30, the people who lost their homes have rejected them. They’ve insisted that they don’t want to be uprooted from their home village to another one. Currently, the families are reportedly in tents and tin sheds.

During the march, Deepak Baij suffered a sprain in the leg, which compelled him to stop the march. Then he joined the procession with his auto, whereas the party workers and villagers started the padyatra.

The government, meanwhile, deployed large police numbers on the route to ensure and uphold law and order. In addition, the cops also issued an advisory regarding traffic congestion and the temporary closing of roads between Shri Ram Mandir and Telibandha during the march.
