The Chhattisgarh Assembly’s Monsoon Session saw strong political wrangling on the second day as Parliament was about to take up the Congress party’s no-confidence motion against the Vishnu Deo Sai-led government.

Dr Charan Das Mahant, leader in the Opposition, launched the debate by submitting a 136-point chargesheet against the state government surface charging the Congress’ allegations on issues pertaining to governance and public issues.

BJP MLAs Ajay Chandrakar joined the discussion and vehemently attacked the opposition saying that the Leader of Opposition was initiating a debate on no-confidence motion that was unusual. He noted that it “shows how untrustworthy party colleagues are around Mahant.

This kicked off instant responses from the Congress benches. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel then replied to this by raising his hands on being asked to do the same by opposition MLAs, to express their trust and confidence in Mahant.

But Chandrakar added to his criticism saying the time was “comical”. The Congress had presented the no-confidence motion against the government but instead had to show its confidence in its own leader, he said.

The Assembly debate caught a political flavour with the ruling BJP and opposition Congress throwing insults at each other over style and substance of their leadership and credibility.

Led by the Congress, the no-confidence motion aims to harry the Sai government on multiple governance-related matters which have been examined during the session. Then there are anticipated to be comments on the floor arising from the treasury benches, with the motion being voted upon in the Assembly.
