Pakhanjanjur, a region within the Kanker district has been experiencing tension due to recent administrative move that saw the demolition drives, which provoked a lot of anger among the people living in the area. On Friday, Bang community members demanded a total bandh to protest, and its effects were felt throughout the Kapasi, Pakhanjur, and the Bande areas as the majority of shops were still closed in the morning.
The demonstration is arranged, as a reaction to the demolition of half a dozen houses in the New Para locality, which was undertaken by the administration as a bulldozer exercise. The residents have been very bitter, claiming that the move was unwarranted and it was done without due consideration. The matter has also been exacerbated by the fact that the movement has been supported by other different communities making it a wider public protest.
Demonstrators are currently planning a mass protest with plans to surround SDM office as a sign of protest. The situation is also being closely monitored by authorities, because there is a likelihood of escalation, particularly in the Paralkot region where there is reportedly a high tension.
Peaceful demonstrations have been demanded by local leaders, yet the situation is still volatile. The government has not provided a comprehensive explanation on the demolition drive which has become the main issue of debate.
As more people join and the mood of the masses, the bandh and the scheduled protests underscore mounting tension between the citizens and the government, bringing into question law and order in the country.
