The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday asked the state police department to give it a detailed report regarding the circumstances in which Hemanth alias Dummu, a suspect in Andhra district for shooting a class 10 student with a chainsaw, was killed.
A Division bench presided over by Lisa Gill, CJ, issued directives to the police, while deliberating a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), to give an affidavit from which the details of the firing incident and how the injured man was dealt with should be disclosed.
The court also requested information on how the 15-year-old girl was being cared for and her health.
Accused Allegedly Tried to Escape Custody
Earlier Saturday, the man, who is 21, allegedly armed with a chainsaw carrying into Zilla Parishad High School in Rapthadu and attacked a Class 10 student. Another girl had injuries sustained in attempts to intervene.
A special police team arrested Hemanth on Sunday evening in the forest area at Atmakur. The shooter took his own life later that night after he tried to break free as police had taken him to the Rapthadu crime scene, the police said.
He allegedly threw stones at some police officers accompanying him during his attempts to flee, police said.
Accused Undergoes Leg Amputation
Later, videos of Hemanth in a semi-conscious state, being rushed to hospital, went viral on social media.
Solomon Raju, senior advocate with Hemanth, questioned the court on the firing by the police and how it unfolded.
Hemanth lost his right leg which got amputated above the knee level on Tuesday at the Government General Hospital, Anantapur due to severe complications with the bullet wounds suffered in the leg, officials said.
The High Court has in the meantime been waiting for the police department’s in-depth reply to the incident.
