New Delhi: To add to Vinesh Phogat’s woes, which have seen her come back strongly from retirement to seek participation in the Asian Games, she received a massive jolt on Wednesday when the Wrestling Federation of India refused to select her in the team due to the ongoing spat between them.

According to the WFI, the National Open Ranking tournament taking place in the coming week would not qualify as one of the eligible tournaments required to pick a team for the Asian Games. This implies that even if Phogat shows great form during the tournament, it won’t help her make the Asian Games team.

Phogat had made a great comeback from retirement and was seeking to participate in the Asian Games. The athlete has been a constant critic of the WFI leaders and has been in a public feud with the federation regarding several issues.

The move by the WFI to keep National Open Ranking out of Asian Games selection criteria has been perceived by several people as yet another effort by the federation to target Phogat.

Asian Games are among the most significant sporting events in the region and will take place in Hangzhou, China. The move by the WFI comes as a blow to Phogat, considering the athlete has already won medals in Asian Games.

The conflict between Phogat and the WFI has had far-reaching effects on Indian wrestling. Therefore, there is a need for the two parties to reconcile their differences in the best interest of the game.
