Shreyas Iyer will lead India for the next two white-ball Test series in Ireland and England, replacing Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain. The officials’ announcement is likely to come when the selection committee hears the India team members. With the switch, it’s likely that T20I captain Suryakumar will bid goodbye to the cricketing position as a regular member of the T20 Set-up as well. Though he led India in the 2026 T20 World Cup title earlier this year.
It’s reported that after showcasing his consistency as a franchise captain and brilliance with the bat, Shreyas has become one of the selectors’ ‘go-to’ options. Tilak Varma is poised to be the vice captain of the team along with a young batting sensation in the shortest format, as the team management has given priority to developing leadership units for the shortest format.
It was in December 2023 last time Shreyas played for India in T20 internationals but his remarkable captaincy record has been aplenty in bolstering his comeback case. He led the Delhi Capitals to the maiden IPL final in 2020, led Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 IPL title and then led Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in over 10 years.
It marks India’s recent lead in leadership change with Shubman Gill being appointed ODI captain after Rohit Sharma. Shreyas is considered to be a leader in the making who can carry India forward into the next phase of T20 cricket and at the same time keep the dressing room atmosphere purring like a kitten.
