Former India head coach Rahul Dravid and veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin appear to have found themselves in the hot seat after the departure of Brendon McCullum from the job as England’s next Test coach.

Multiple sources suggest that England’s England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) may hold a number of game-changer talent options following their decision to sail off into the sunset with McCullum in the long version. England’s poor Test form meant that McCullum has been relieved to not be responsible for coaching the Test team. However, he will remain in charge of the country’s setup for white-ball cricket.

Rahul Dravid, known for his contributions to India’s success as a batsman, is expected to be among the shortlisted candidates due to his extensive coaching experience and comprehensive knowledge of the game, his tactical outlook and a proven track record of nurturing youth players. His calm leadership style and proven track record have made him an attractive candidate for England’s rebuilding plans.

At the same time, Ravichandran Ashwin has also caught the eyes of many. With only minimal experience as a coach, the experienced bowler is regarded as one of the sharpest tactical minds in cricket. His thorough knowledge of Test cricket, experience of match-situation and analytical style has reportedly wowed players.

The reports have sparked widespread discussion across the cricketing world, as both Dravid and Ashwin have spent their careers representing India. Should either appointment become reality, it will be a rare sighting of an Indian cricket icon in command of England’s Test team.

The ECB haven’t officially confirmed their shortlist, and the process appears to be ongoing, with a final decision to be announced in the coming weeks.
