While the Indian Premier League officially has no plans to retire MS Dhoni from the game, the former skipper in his post-match press conference after Chennai Super Kings’ last home game of IPL 2026 clearly indicated that the legendary cricketer is stepping down.
Just after CSK lost a five-wicket match to Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk, Dhoni joined his team-mates for lap of honour around the stadium. The fans were hoping to see him play in yellow again, but he was unable to play the entire IPL 2026 season due to persistent injury in the calf. The fans were hoping to see him in yellow but as he was out with a persistent injury in the calf, he missed the entire IPL 2026 season.
The emotional mood was heightened when former CSK player Suresh Raina shared some of the details of his talks with Dhoni in the post-match celebrations. In a TV interview, Raina told Dhoni to not see the IPL 2026 season as a goodbye season as he had not played a single match. To Dhoni’s response of “My body is a little weak,” Raina said, “Don’t worry, you’ll find it more comfortable the next time.”
The statement instantly brought up more questions regarding Dhoni’s future. He didn’t say no to returning, but he did say let me see, so many fans took that as his most direct answer yet that some fitness problems may be to blame and end his chances of a return next season.
Retirement speculation had already been ramping up with Dhoni missing the tournament altogether, following in the footsteps of CSK coach Stephen Fleming, who admitted earlier that the franchise had been taking care of the veteran’s calf injury. The moments of emotional drama at Chepauk seemed like a goodbye moment for one of the biggest icons of IPL, as CSK is finding it tough in the season and Dhoni is still sidelined.
