India has collected the maximum ever numbers of medals in the Asian Para Games so far, a total of 114 of which have been 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze. The Indian team is currently at fourth place (1 day remain) in the competition. But no Indian athletes have been organised for the last day.

At the previous edition, held in Hangzhou, India earned 108 medals with 27 Gold, 32 Silver and 49 Bronze. India had picked up 111 medals at that edition, with three medals being later disqualified due to doping violations by Neeraj Yadav and Parveen.

Strong Performance Despite Smaller Contingent

This is all good news for Aichi-Nagoya with expectations having been high with India sending a far smaller contingent this time. This year this country would send 168 para-athletes as opposed to 309 athletes in the prior edition in Hangzhou.

Indian sport persons performed well in various events though in the smaller representation and set a new benchmark for the Indian athletes at the continental event.

Para Athletics Leads Medal Contribution

Para athletics is again the largest contributor of medals for India with more than half of all the medals. The Indian para-athletics team secured 65 medals of which 22 are gold, 19 are silver and 24 are bronze.

This was 12 medals up on the previous edition when the team’s total was down to 53 medals with subsequent disqualifications.

The second largest contribution was from Para badminton where 16 medals (3 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze) were achieved. However, this was five fewer than the 21 medals won in the discipline at the previous Games.

The unprecedented campaign reflects the success of India’s para-sports program and the role of its Para sportspersons in the Asian arena.
