India head coach Gautam Gambhir has admitted his toughest decision as coach of the T20 format was when he handed up the role of Sanju Samson in the playing XI for that format.
Gambhir candidly admitted to JioStar that the thought hit him when he had to make the decision, adding that he was on a night of toss and turn sleep before making the call. He also spoke with Samson directly, per the head coach.
“That would, I’m being honest with you, at some point during two years of my walk, be the worst night’s sleep I had ever had,” said Gambhir, when asked about his most difficult coaching moment in the T20 format.
The mess emerged at an era when op was playing at a level that he is worth a lot in the T20 format in India, and even got a Player of the Tournament title for. But Gambhir said that the team management was challenged by Sooryavanshi’s form, so much so that they couldn’t ignore the youngster.
“So there’s someone that was a player of the tournament and then he has to be left out after three or four games.” He said that Sooryavanshi was firing on all cylinders and India must bag the series.
Gautam Gambhirsaid his meeting with Samson was a sincere one where he discussed everything they required to accomplish in the near future. The coach believes Sooryavanshi is in a position to make impact at the top of the order as India itself is seeking some momentum.
“I had a very, very honest talk with him and needed someone who can score runs at the top and build a strong platform,” Gambhir said.
Gambhir also conceded that despite the early setback Samson went with the decision, showing the challenge of rewarding past performances and reacting to his form in his international team, recently.
