The audience, rather than witnesses, descended upon chaos Canada’s World Cup group stage win over Qatar after the final whistle, after the opening of temperatures which had come to a head in a physical and heated match in Vancouver.
The co-hosts were emphatic in their Group B duel to comfortably defend the early lead and ensure a 6-0 victory, but the verdict was soured by controversy, injuries and horns, as well as having an early lead squandered on hand. Canada dominated the game and top forward Jonathan David blazed through the competition with a hat trick.
David’s back-to-back three goals secured him an EBA-best resurgence in hopes of grabbing a Golden Boot with the help of other powerhouse players around the world, further cementing Canada’s hopes of deep diving into the competition.
Subsequent, the contest grew more heated and furious, inspired by a lengthy cascade of impetuous tackles by the Qatar challenge artists. Ismael Kone was forced off on a stretcher after picking up a serious injury from teammate Assim Madibo from Qatar after falling into an unsafe tackle. It prompted Canadian players and fans to be angry.
This was Qatar’s second sending-off of the game with Madibo being the victim of their red card action. Defender Homam Ahmed was sent off in the early phase for missing an obvious chancescoring opportunity and the visitors eventually played with a vastly under-strength team for the bulk of the time.
But that led to frustration from both sides, and ultimately beyond the final whistle when a swirl of players from both teams had a head-to-head collision.
Canada emerge from the fray in excellent shape in Group B with Qatar enduring another hard World Cup run on the back of their bookmakers’ reports.
