New Delhi: This seismic political upheaval that has shaken the nation’s capital comes from seven Members of Parliament who left the Aam Aadmi Party en masse. While the action has come quickly, some experts have called this an “inevitable chronicle of defections.” This mass desertion from AAP is based on long-standing issues related to the governance of the party in Punjab.
The Punjab Issue
This defection has seriously weakened the ranks of AAP. Six out of the total seven who quit the Rajya Sabha seats belong to Punjab. The reason for the rift seems to have started in late 2024 as AAP prepared itself for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
The leaders in Punjab were unhappy with what they felt was the “Delhi-centric” policies followed by the top leadership of the party. The leaders from Punjab, who are gearing up for Assembly elections in 2027, felt that they had not received any administrative attention from the Delhi-based AAP leadership.
Prominent Resignations
One of the prominent defectors is the academic Sandeep Pathak, whose expertise lies in politics and who was earlier associated with IIT. The defection of this strategist has exposed flaws in the party’s own political strategies. He had served as the “architect” for the spread of AAP, making him responsible for AAP’s success in states like Punjab and Gujarat.
It has been reported that at least three of those who resigned from AAP have successfully joined BJP. The rest are either going to follow them or will operate independently.
Party in Transition
The BJP has tried to depict the defections as a “vote of no confidence” in the leadership of Mr. Kejriwal. On the other hand, the spokespersons of AAP have called the event “Operation Lotus” by the saffron party. According to their claims, the defections were done under duress or inducement.
The process of rebuilding AAP in the upper house of parliament along with the rebellion in the Punjab unit poses great challenges for this young party. This incident can be termed as the first major internal crisis faced by AAP since its establishment.
