After a series of vigorous political negotiations and long consensus-building meetings in New Delhi, the Congress high command has summoned an important legislative party meeting in Karnataka this Saturday. The legislative party meeting will be held for the purpose of officially finalizing the shape of the new cabinet that will come into force in Karnataka.
This comes following the retirement of veteran politician Siddaramaiah from the position of the Chief Minister, who resigned on Thursday. Following this, the process was quickened on Friday when outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Congress Chief of the state D.K. Shivakumar, who is expected to become the new chief minister, had detailed talks with senior Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in the national capital.
One aspect of concern that persists is the number of deputy chief ministers working under Shivakumar. According to sources privy to the development, the party’s high command was apparently considering keeping only two deputies at most instead of four deputy chief ministers, which was originally proposed as part of the equation to please different caste groups.
Siddaramaiah, who resigned after a long period of uncertainty regarding the party’s future, also ruled out reports about any plans for entering center politics. “I politely turned down an invitation from the high command to contest for a Rajya Sabha seat,” the veteran politician said. He further affirmed that he will continue being actively engaged in state politics and vowed to serve the people of Karnataka.
As regards other political developments, some pictures leaked from the meetings held in Delhi revealed the presence of the son of Siddaramaiah –Yathindra Siddaramaiah. Speculations were raised surrounding his possible induction in the new cabinet. Although some initially rumored that he may be appointed deputy chief minister to hold on to the support of the powerful AHINDA socio-political coalition, reliable sources within the party disclosed that Yathindra is expected to join the cabinet as a cabinet minister.
