New Delhi: Conditions of severe heatwave persist in many regions of India with authorities issuing health warnings and red alert due to soaring temperatures. In a recent warning by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there has been an assurance that the conditions of extreme heat cannot be expected to ease soon. In a press statement issued by the IMD on May 20, “Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions likely to continue to prevail over northwest & central India during the week and over East India during next 5 days.”
Banda Bakes under Red Alert
The epicentre of the deadly weather system has been observed in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda region that registered an unprecedented 48 degrees centigrade on Wednesday. As per data recorded by the Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, this is an alarming 4.5-degree deviation from the seasonal average and the highest temperature recorded in the country that day. With such extreme conditions prevailing, meteorologists have issued a ‘Red Alert’ in Banda and more than 20 other districts as chances of suffering from heat sickness remain very high for all age groups.
Deadly Combination of Westerly Winds and “Warm Nights”
The weather experts at Lucknow Met office have stated that the worsening situation is due to warm westerly winds blowing from Thar Desert, along with an anticyclone system in place in central parts of India. Moreover, the IMD has issued “warm night” warning alerts. It is a condition which stops temperatures from falling properly after sunset, thereby not allowing the body of humans to recover from the day’s heat. With cities such as Prayagraj (46.4°C) and Hamirpur (46.2°C) following close on the heels of Banda, the respective state governments have initiated protective measures like shutting down their schools early.
