Betul: Speed has wreaked havoc in Madhya Pradesh once again. Two people died and 15 are reported to be injured in a horrific road accident in Betul district. There were 21 people in the trolley. All the injured have been admitted to the hospital.
There was a traffic jam at the spot after the accident. After receiving information about the accident, the police reached the spot and sent the injured person to the hospital. The police kept the dead body aside and cleared the jammed traffic. All the people came to their village from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu to celebrate the festival. All the laborers are said to be residents of the Bakud and Dulara villages of Betul district.
Sources reveal that all the people were going to the village sitting on a tractor trolley as they could not find a bus, when they met with an accident. The driver was driving the tractor carelessly. Due to high speed, the tractor along with the trolley went out of control and overturned on the ghat. After the accident, many workers fell into a deep ditch, who were rescued by the police. The incident took place at Banjari Mai Ghat in Kotwali police station area.
Road accidents are a significant concern in Madhya Pradesh. In 2022, the state reported 54,432 accidents, accounting for 11.8% of all accidents in India. While the number of accidents is high, the severity, measured by the number of fatalities per 100 accidents, is lower than the national average. However, the state witnessed a concerning rise in road accident fatalities, with over 13,000 deaths in 2022.
