Nike has unveiled its first-ever running shoe designed specifically for India, called the Vegam Run, as it looks to expand its reach in the world’s most populous country. The shoe will go on sale on Flipkart on November 1 at Rs 3,795, or approximately $40.
According to reports, the sportswear giant took around five months to design and manufacture the shoe.
Deepa Ramprasad, senior director of Nike Road Running Footwear, said the brief was to address road conditions and wear patterns specific to Indian runners while maintaining affordability and versatile cushioning, according to a statement quoted by a media outlet.
The design incorporates feedback from local athletes, and the shoe will also be available at selected physical stores across the country.
Unlike its traditional approach, Nike has introduced a product that combines affordability with performance features tailored to local preferences. Launching the Vegam Run on Flipkart gives the company access to a wider digital audience beyond major retail markets.
The launch follows other India-focused initiatives by the company. Earlier this month, Nike announced plans to open a new campus in India as it seeks to strengthen its presence amid a growing running culture. The move also follows the company’s October kit sponsorship deal with cricket franchise Mumbai Indians and its operational setup in Bengaluru.
The launch comes at a challenging time for Nike globally. The company is grappling with a sales slump in key markets, including China, where sales have declined for nine consecutive quarters.
Chief Executive Officer Elliott Hill, who is two years into his tenure, is betting on a revamped product pipeline. Analysts say locally driven designs in key markets could play an important role in the company’s recovery.
Running remains one of Nike’s stronger business segments. The company’s global running business has recorded double-digit growth for six consecutive quarters. However, Hill warned analysts earlier this month that the performance business was not yet large enough to offset pressure on Nike’s sportswear segment.
The Nike Vegam Run will be available on Flipkart from November 1 at Rs 3,795.
