UTTAR PRADESH: The Supreme Court on Friday sought a status report on steps taken following the murder of gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother asking why the duo were paraded and not taken to the hospital gate in an ambulance.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on April 15th while they were being taken for a medical check up to the government hospital in Pragyaraj.

The bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Dipankar Datta also sought a report on the police encounter of Ahmad’s son Asad, who was killed by a special task force in Jhansi on April 13.

During the hearing, the petitioner demanded an independent inquiry under the supervision of a retired judge of the Supreme Court. In response the UP government stated that a judicial commission was constituted priorly to probe the matter.

The UP Govt has will now through an affidavit explain the circumstances under which Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were killed and steps taken to inquire into the shooting. The apex court has given a time of 3 weeks to submit the report.
