Tuticorin: Tamil Nadu government issued an order on Monday to transfer the case related to the alleged custodial deaths of the father-son duo which is registered at Kovilpatti East Police Station to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
This comes after the Madras High Court said on Monday that there would be no obligation if the case is transferred to the central apex agency as it is the policy decision of the state to transfer the custodial deaths case to CBI.
Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami on Monday, said that the government would transfer the case to the agency if the Madras High Court allows it to do so.
Jayaraj & Bennicks case so far:
On June 19, Jayaram (59) and his son Bennicks(31) were arrested for keeping their mobile phone shop open beyond business hours permissible due to the coronavirus lockdown. Both father and son were arrested and lodged in Kovilpatti sub jail.
On June 22, Jayaram and Bennicks were admitted to the Kovilpatti government hospital while the son died on the same night and the father breathed his last on morning June 23.two Senior Inspector have been suspended and departmental action is also being taken against two chief guards of the jail according to reports.
The incident had triggered a nation-wide furore, leading to the suspension of five policemen, including an inspector and two Sub-Inspectors.
