Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken a critical stance on India’s recent actions, specifically focusing on the revocation of diplomatic immunity for 40 Canadian diplomats. In his remarks on Friday, Trudeau accused India of violating a fundamental tenet of diplomacy and defying the principles outlined in the Vienna Convention. He also emphasized that this move should be a matter of concern for all nations across the globe. Additionally, Trudeau raised the issue of the murder of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, implying India’s involvement.
Trudeau elaborated on the diplomatic dispute, highlighting India’s decision to unilaterally strip 40 Canadian diplomats in India of their diplomatic immunity, a clear breach of the Vienna Convention’s norms that govern diplomacy. He stressed that this action alone should raise alarms worldwide, aside from the grave allegations made against India concerning the alleged killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil.
Furthermore, Trudeau underscored how India’s actions were disrupting the normal course of life for millions of people, both in India and Canada. He stated that this disruption was caused by India’s disregard for a fundamental diplomatic principle.
This controversy has escalated, with Canada responding to India’s demand for the withdrawal of 41 diplomats by actually withdrawing them. India justified its demand for parity in diplomatic staff stationed in each other’s countries due to the state of bilateral relations and alleged Canadian interference in India’s internal affairs. However, Canada framed the move as “expulsion” of its diplomats, while India insisted that its actions were in line with the Vienna Convention, specifically Article 11.1, which allows a receiving state to require the mission’s size to be reasonable and normal.
Notably, the US and UK have expressed concerns in support of Canada, aligning with its stance on the departure of Canadian diplomats from India. This diplomatic tussle highlights the complexities and sensitivities of international relations in a world marked by shifting alliances and differing interpretations of diplomatic norms.
