On the 56th birth anniversary of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) organized a massive job fair at Talkatora Stadium in the Indian capital on Friday, inviting thousands of job aspirants to the event. Nearly 35,000 people had applied for the recruitment drive, according to organisers.

The morning was an auspicious one, there was significant crowd outside the venue during the event organised by the IYC, jointly with the Delhi Congress. Eager youngsters from different professions were reportedly in-stuffed in the stadium hall in search for job opportunities in different professions.

Overwhelming response showed how employment is a serious concern of India’s youth, said Uday Bhanu Chib, IYC national president. He said there was a lot of interest in employment opportunity as candidates signed up on the internet about the job fair, which they heard about beforehand.

Chib said the programme was a “silent protest” against the issue of unemployment and asked the BJP-led Union government to ensure more employment opportunities. He termed the government responsibility to provide job opportunities as it is their duty to fulfill the vowed ones, while the opposition parties could organise up employment racks.

Hundreds of companies took part in the fair and offered interviews there, the organisers said. Few candidates were shortlisted and sent an offer letter and some began the recruitment process right away. The organisers reportedly stopped collecting applications 5 days prior to the event, as there were too many.

The programme started with the national anthem and enabled the participants to get hands-on experience with recruiters from various companies. The chief leaders also met with the candidates to hear about their education and future plans.

It was one of the biggest employment focus programmes held by the Youth Congress, highlighting the continuing debate on job creation, job with youth and economic opportunities in the country.
