Bengaluru: Suspension of six police officers, including a sub-inspector, has been announced owing to gross security lapses witnessed recently on a highway earmarked for PM Modi’s convoy. This decision was made by some top ranking officials following the results of an initial investigation which revealed gross negligence by some security personnel in connection with the sanitization of VVIP route.
On May 10, 2026, there was a serious security lapse near Vaderahalli Gate on Kanakapura Road in the south district of Bangalore city. This particular area happened to be only a few kilometers away from Art of Living Foundation, where the PM was scheduled to visit on that day.
Discovery of Explosive Materials
It was during a routine morning inspection at high alert that the matter was reported. One of the police personnel noticed a suspicious, covered box wrapped in plastic located around 20-25 feet away from the main road adjacent to a forest compound wall.
However, further investigation into the package revealed gelatin sticks of three years’ old age stored among wires, matchsticks, batteries, and circuit boards. Even though forensic reports suggested that these gelatin sticks did not have an active detonator and hence posed no risk of an explosion at that time, their existence, coupled with the presence of circuit boards, made it a serious issue given the anti-sabotage policies laid down for Prime Ministerial visits.
As a result, a probe into this incident was carried out by both the National Investigation Agency and the Intelligence Bureau. The Incident Uncovered Upon investigating the incident internally, Srinivas Gowda, who serves as the Superintendent of Police of Bengaluru South, ordered the suspension of a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector, and four constables. “Personnel responsible for ensuring security along this route could not maintain a level of vigilance that should be,” Gowda pointed out, stressing the significance of maintaining strict vigilance during such missions. Further investigations are under way to analyze CCTV footage from the area where the package was deposited.
