Bakrid 2026: Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), the festival of sacrifice and devotion, will be celebrated with great pomp across the country on Thursday. Eid al-Adha is one of the most important festivals in Islam. It is celebrated on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. Eid commemorates the supreme sacrifice and dedication of Prophet Ibrahim. Animals are sacrificed after prayers.
The Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid also confirmed that Bakrid will be celebrated in India on May 28. However, in some parts of Kashmir, Eid was celebrated on May 27 due to confirmed local moon sightings.
Bakrid 2026: Why is Bakrid celebrated?
Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is one of the most important festivals in Islam. It commemorates the unwavering faith and spirit of sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). It is believed that Ibrahim, at the command of Allah, had decided to sacrifice his son, but pleased with his devotion, Allah accepted the sacrifice of an animal instead.

Bakrid 2026: The Tradition of Sacrifice
Following this tradition, members of the Muslim community offer prayers on this day and perform the ritual of sacrifice. The sacrificial meat is divided into three portions: one for family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor.
