Mumbai: After four persons died and six were left injured when they fell from a local train in Mumbai due to overcrowding in peak hours, the Railway Board has said that new, non-AC trains would be designed and manufactured with automatic door closure facility to prevent Mumbai local train accident.
The deadline for introducing the first prototype of such a non-AC train with door closure facility in the Mumbai Suburban Railway network has been fixed as January 2026.
Sources said that in the wake of the incident in Mumbai, Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw and Railway Board officials held a meeting with a team from the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF).
Mumbai Local Train Accident
According to railway officials, the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. between Diva and Kopar railway stations on the Central Railway. While one train was heading towards Kasara, the other was approaching Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. All the deceased are reportedly between 30-35 years of age.
The railway officials were immediately alerted about the incident by the guard of the Kasara-bound train. Following this, officials and police personnel rushed to the spot with ambulances and rescued the injured. They were rushed to a hospital in Kalwa where five were declared dead.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also offered condolences to the deceased through a tweet on X, “Deeply pained by the incident where 8 passengers fell from a local train between Diva and Mumbra stations, unfortunately leading to loss of lives. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We stand with them in this difficult time”.
Three of the deceased have been identified so far. Among them are 23-year-old Ketan Dilip Saroj, a resident of Ulhasnagar, 34-year-old railway employee Vickey Babasaheb Mukhidal and a person named Rahul Santosh Gupta. The fourth is yet to be identified.
