OSLO: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Oslo, the capital city of Norway, on Monday, making history as the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Scandinavian country after 43 years. As per MEA, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre greeted PM Modi at the airport. Both the Prime Ministers engaged in a high-level bilateral meeting to discuss and enhance the multi-faceted relations between India and Norway. During his visit, King Harald V of Norway on Monday awarded the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit to PM Modi.
The discussion was on the acceleration of trade and investments, focusing particularly on utilizing the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement signed recently. Among other future-oriented collaborative activities on the agenda were clean and green technologies, renewable energy, and blue economy. India wants Norway to invest further in India’s capital markets via its Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG).
Third India-Nordic SummitNordics are the fourth nation that PM Modi will visit as part of his five-nation visit that commenced with UAE, continued with the Netherlands, and most recently with Sweden. In Norway, the emphasis will shift to regional collaboration as PM Modi prepares to attend the third India-Nordic Summit set to be held tomorrow, Tuesday.
The summit will gather the heads of states of India along with those of all five Nordic countries, who are: Norway:
- Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre Denmark
- Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen Finland
- Prime Minister Petteri Orpo Iceland
- Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir Sweden
- Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson
On the back of the foundations set in Stockholm (2018) and Copenhagen (2022), the third India-Nordic summit in 2026 promises to add a new strategic angle to India-Nordic relationship. The leaders will engage in discussions on fostering resilient supply chains, dealing with global instabilities, and working on innovations related to AI, digitalization, and Arctic studies. After his stay in Norway, PM Modi will head to Italy.
