On Monday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla described the Constitution of India as more than just a text on governance, it is the soul of the nation and a symbol of its national consciousness.

Addressing the first meeting of the ‘Jan Pratinidhi Sammelan’ in Panchkula, Haryana, Birla said that the Constitution is the aspirations and expectations of millions of citizens. He emphasised that there should not be a shift from public serving to public business.

Having the Constitution as our guiding principles should see the focus of our collective effort to be on governance and administration by public service, Om Birla said.

Consent and Dissension Enhance Democracy

Both consent and dissent are key attributes of a good democracy, Birla added. He said the abundance of ideas will offer new insights, and team ups will push the country and the states further.

It was organised by the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on the occasion of the ‘Samvidhan Pakhwada’. The event was attended by Chief Minister of Haryana Nayab Singh Saini, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Speaker of the Assembly Harvinder Kalyan, ministers and few sitting and former legislators.

Birla Highlights Haryana’s Development Journey

Haryana is celebrating 60 years of its establishment as an independent State, Birla outlined its journey of development despite all odds as an instance of hard work, courage and team work.

He also observed that public involvement in democracy, from Panchayats to Parliament, continues to be one of the biggest assets of the country. The framers of the Indian Constitution had seen the idea of parliamentary democracy through even in the face of the country’s linguistic, cultural, religious and geographical diversity. The provision of parliamentary democracy in a linguistically, culturally and religiously diverse country was the foresight of the Constitution’s drafters.

Chairing the House Birla appealed the lawmakers to voice the aspirations of the public in the House, draft the legislation for the public welfare and promote democracy in the country.
