Riyadh: NSA Ajit Doval wrapped up his strategic visit to Saudi Arabia on Sunday, April 19, 2026. The visit was meant to address the dynamic West Asian security situation and guarantee the nation’s vital energy security interests.
Amidst growing regional turbulence, the Indian government is increasingly worried about disturbances to India’s vital sea trade routes. The NSA’s visit can be considered a significant step in ensuring that India’s “energy bridge” remains intact amid the ongoing tensions.
Doval had extensive talks with several key figures from the Gulf nation, emphasizing the importance of India-Saudi cooperation across various sectors:
Energy Security: Doval met with the country’s energy minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, where they discussed securing a constant flow of crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas. The kingdom is currently India’s third-largest energy supplier, and the meetings were intended to facilitate “smooth and safe passage” of merchant vessels amid regional conflicts.”
Coordination in Diplomacy: The NSA had a meeting with the Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan where both discussed the present developments in the region and stressed that “diplomacy” would play an important role in de-escalating the present tensions.
Coordination in Security: Doval also met with his counterpart, Dr. Musaed Al-Aiban, and discussed counterterrorism and maritime security.
Further Diplomatic Engagement
The visit of Doval comes after several diplomatic meetings conducted by India in the Gulf states, including the visit of the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to the UAE and the visit of the Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri to Qatar.
India is keenly interested in ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains safe along with the well-being of the more than four million Indians who are living in Saudi Arabia. Through closer relations with Saudi Arabia, India wishes to become a stabilizing power in the region while keeping its economy insulated from energy shocks.
