Mumbai Metro One introduces India’s first WhatsApp-based digital metro pass. In a first for metro services in India, Mumbai Metro One has begun issuing metro passes entirely through WhatsApp, allowing commuters to purchase, store and use their passes directly on their smartphones.
The metro operator on Sunday introduced the fully digital pass system for commuters travelling on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, marking a significant step towards technology-driven urban mobility. The new system operates through Mumbai Metro One’s WhatsApp e-ticketing platform, which was launched in November 2022 and already allows commuters to book QR-based tickets for single journeys.
Purchasing a digital pass is a simple three-step process. Commuters need to send “Hi” to the Mumbai Metro One WhatsApp number, select the “Book Now” option, choose the digital pass option and complete the payment. The pass is issued instantly and can be used immediately.
According to officials, commuters can also add the digital pass to Google Wallet or Apple Wallet, allowing them to access it directly from their smartphones. The digital pass comes with two options to meet different travel needs. The Trip Pass allows regular commuters to purchase a predefined number of journeys in advance and use them as required. The Store Value Pass, meanwhile, allows users to load a specific amount of money into their account. The applicable fare is then automatically deducted after each journey.
“The platform has been developed and facilitated by Billeasy, while PayU India provides the digital payment infrastructure. The system supports payments through UPI, debit cards and credit cards, officials said.”
Mumbai Metro One completed 12 years of operations in June this year and has carried more than 125 crore passengers so far.Officials said the initiative is aimed at strengthening the metro operator’s focus on technology-driven and customer-centric mobility solutions. By reducing dependence on physical tickets and helping commuters avoid queues at stations, the digital pass system is expected to make travel more convenient and seamless for Mumbaikars.
