Kolkata: The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, transferred Manoj Kumar Verma as the commissioner of Kolkata Police on Tuesday. Previously, he served the position of Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order for West Bengal, and Manoj is an IPS officer from the batch of 1998. His appointment is at the right time since Vineet Kumar Goyal, the previous poster, has been transferred to the post of ADG, Special Task Force.
Vineet Kumar Goyal, an IPS officer of the 1994 batch, attracted controversy in recent months and specifically in the sensational case of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. It roused public concern and brought junior doctors to protest for justice for such patients and increased precautions.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had effected this reshuffle after a meeting late in the night with the striking doctors where issues of safety and administration were on the table. At this meeting, Goyal offered his resignation, which was in consonance with the sentiments of junior doctors.
Goyal had been in the post since 2021 and took over the office from Soumen Mittra, who, in turn, was holding the same position at Kolkata earlier. Indeed, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Goyal had tasted several highflying positions with Kolkata Police, having served as Joint Commissioner of Police for Special Task Force and Traffic and Additional Commissioner of Police with Kolkata Police when posted.
The new police commissioner of Kolkata empowers the reforms in the administration after the pressure of growing lawlessness and increasing crime rate in the state capital of Kolkata.
