Imphal: Manipur Police has ordered a time-bound inquiry under the Inspector General of Police to probe events leading to the looting of an armoury on August 3 in Bishnupur. Officials who are aware of the developments have said that every effort was being made by Manipur Police to end the cycle of violence in the state which began on May 3 between majority Meitei and Kuki community.
In fresh violence that broke out on Sunday, over fifteen houses were set on fire in Manipur’s Imphal West District after a mob went on a rampage at Langol Games village on Saturday. Security personnel fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control. During the incident, a 45-year-old man was shot and was admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences with bullet wounds on left thigh.
In Manipur, a day without an incident is called absence of violence’ and is not perceived as normal nowadays. It is a long way to go before things come back to normalcy. More than 160 people have lost their livessince the clashes broke on May 3, after Tribal Solidarity March was organised on Meitei community’s demand for ST status.
