West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP, over the recent communal violence in Murshidabad district. The protests were against a new law on the regulation and management of Waqf properties, Islamic charitable endowments. Rebels killed a father and son, stabbed them with a knife, when they attacked in Suti and Samserganj, killing three, including a father and son, Haragobindo Das (72) and Chandan Das (40). Ezaz Ahmed (25) was also reportedly killed in police firing: another victim.

Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of instigating the riots for political gain and was speaking at a meeting with religious leaders to discuss the law. In the petition, Anjum also alleged that criminal elements of Bangladesh were let into India via the border, and allowed to provoke violence by crossing the border and creating violence in her petition, questioning the performance of the Border Security Force, under the Union Home Ministry, headed by Shah. “A news agency post was a social media post that suggested that people from Bangladesh were behind the riots. Who allowed them in?” Banerjee said that the BSF reports to Amit Shah.

She alleged that Shah and the BJP were trying to divide the society and create communal tension. “So what you want is to divide Hindus and Muslims.” She said that it is your only agenda, and that Shah’s control over federal agencies was being used to disrupt harmony and governance in the state.

Banerjee also threw a dig at Shah’s political ambitions, saying, “You will never be the Prime Minister. They will be left crawling when Modi leaves. Shah had caused ‘maximum damage’ to the country by planning and controlling the central agencies,” she urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rein him in.
