Key accused in the groping and assaulting case from Bihar’s Jamui, was shot in his leg during an encounter, the Bihar police said early on Tuesday morning.
Pictures shared by the media houses showed the accused Nandan Yadav, his face still covered, with arms slung across the shoulders of police personnel as they rushed him to the hospital. According to the police, Yadav was being taken to the crime scene as a part of investigation, when he tried to flee from the custody. Police said in an encounter followed and he was shot in his leg.
So far five people have been arrested in the case. In addition to these five, two more minors have also been are arrested. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said that all the accused involved in the crime were being identified and assured that strict action was taken against them. Bihar Minister Shrawan Kumar also said that the state police had acted quickly and none of the accused in the case will be spared.
“It is very tragic. It is a shameful incident, and no matter how much it is condemned, it is not enough. Those who were involved in this incident were arrested yesterday, and the police are taking strict action against those who are guilty. Those who commit such acts will not be spared; the strictest action will be taken against them… The government is working to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” he said.
Earlier on September 19th, a video made rounds on the social media where a group of men was seen assaulting a boy and groping his female friend. They also tried to separate the girl from the boy. Both students of class 10 had been returning from their coaching classes when they approached them. In the video, the girl can be heard screaming and pleading to be allowed to leave as the group continues to harass them. Her friend manages to break free and rushes towards her before they make another attempt to reach their scooter.
Even as the two get on the two-wheeler to leave, members of the group continue to stop them and one of them grabs the girl’s arm.
Later Nandan Yadav, the key accused, cuts into frame, grabs the girl by her neck, spins her around, and then uses his arms to carry her to a distance. The girl’s legs can be seen thrashing air as Nandan Yadav continues to run away with her. The boy later comes around, tries to separate the girl from Yadav, who puts her down and then uses the back of his hand to push her while touching her chest, the video showed. Yadav continued to push her as the boy shields the girl.
The Jamui police later intensified the action against the individuals sharing the video or disclosing the information, maintaining that it could reveal the identity of the minor victim.
Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajit Dayal warned that revealing the identity of the victim constitutes a serious offense and can attract arrest and can attract action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, the Information Technology Act, and the Juvenile Justice Act.
